The Maitland Art Center was founded as an art colony in 1937 by visionary American artist and architect, André Smith (1880-1959). The Art Center is one of the few surviving examples of “Mayan Revival” or fantasy architecture in the Southeast. In 2014 the Maitland Art Center became a National Historic Landmark.
You may choose from a few different spots for the ceremony, with the Mayan Chapel being the most popular option. Just be aware that is the only spot without shade and surrounded by walls, which makes it extremely hot during the months of May through the first couple of weeks in October. Below are a few photos of the spots you can choose from for your ceremony.
THE MAYAN CHAPEL
THE COURTYARD (ADJACENT TO THE CHAPEL)
MAIN GARDEN
This is a new option not available until recently. There is a tall Oak Tree that provides a lot of shade in this area, making it perfect for our hot season (May-mid October). However, be aware that you would have to walk on grass, in case you are wearing heels.
